Prompts: Compare and Contrast
a. Two opposite views on Love from "The Seducer's Diary"
Do the following:
1. Describe and analyze Cordelia's view on love - use Cordelia's three letters quoted by A (the ostensible editor of the Seducer’s Diary), pp. 15-17 in the Hong translation.
2. Describe and analyze Johannes' view on his love for Cordelia in the "aesthetic sense", using evidence from the Seducer's Diary from p.117 and pp.198-200
3. Decide if either is an adequate conception of love, and say why. If neither is, describe what is lacking in each.
b. Sartre and Beauvoir on Love
Do the following:
Describe and situate Sartre's account of love, as it emerges from textual evidence (use relevant passages from "Being and Nothingness")
Describe and situate Beauvoir's account of love, as it emerges from textual evidence (use relevant passages from "The Second Sex")
Explain the commonalities between the two views
Decide which of the two accounts is more adequate and say why
c. From cinema: Breathless and L'Atalante
Do the following:
Describe the situation of Michel and Patricia in Breathless
Describe the situation of Jean and Juliette in L'Atalante
What are the differences between the two relationships?
Describe how love is depicted in each film, especially as regards the connection between love and loyalty or betrayal. Make sure to discuss different employments of the cinematic medium
